What is a shot log?
A shot log is a record of the shots and takes captured during filming. It notes the scene, shot, take number, file or clip name, and comments on performance or technical issues.
Why do I need a shot log?
A good log makes post-production faster. Editors can find the best takes quickly, assistants can match clips to scenes, and the director can review what has been captured. It also helps you compare what was planned in your shot list with what was actually shot.
What should it include?
Record the date, scene, shot, take, camera, clip name, timecode, status such as good, circled or NG, and notes about sound, performance or problems.
