What is a crew agreement?

A crew agreement is a written contract between a production and a crew member such as a director of photography, sound recordist, gaffer or production assistant. It sets out the role, the dates of work, payment, credit, and the terms under which the crew member contributes to the film.

Why do I need a crew agreement?

Even on small, low-budget or friendly shoots, putting terms in writing prevents misunderstandings about pay, hours, expenses, credit and ownership of the work. A signed agreement also confirms that the production owns the footage and other material the crew member creates, which distributors and insurers will usually expect to see.

What should a crew agreement include?

Typically it covers the crew member name and role, the production title, the start and end dates, rate of pay and payment schedule, on-screen credit, confidentiality, rights in the work created, and how either party can end the agreement.
